Narragansett Times — Town council to further consider surf parking

By Philip Cozzolino — Narragansett, RI —  The town council Monday night unanimously continued a motion to add six public parking spaces to an area in Point Judith after the local surfing population mobilized for being ticketed while parked in the neighborhoods. The continuation comes on the heels of a council work session last week, where a number of potential solutions were discussed, including doing away with the parking restriction ordinance that has been law since 1976.

Last month, both surfers and general water enthusiasts attended a Narragansett Town Council meeting to protest being ticketed while parked along the side of Conant, Louise and Pilgrim Avenues, stating they only began recently being cited for a violation despite parking along the streets for a number of years. Chief of police and acting town manager Sean Corrigan said the parking ordinance is only enforced when the department receives complaints from residents in the area. This neighborhood of Point Judith, popular to surfers due to the breaks, boasts a number of state-designated public access points to the ocean, access surfers say is being shortchanged by the parking restrictions on the books.
