By Liz Bateson NBC 10 News — PROVIDENCE, RI — Major upgrades are coming to Waterplace Park in Providence.

The city received a $7.8 million dollar federally-funded grant to help improve accessibility and revitalize the area which attracts tens of thousands of visitors during WaterFire events.

The area, which was first finished in 1994, has seen wear and tear over the decades due to flooding.

“Sea levels are rising particularly high and the anticipation from our own state agencies is that they could rise several feet. We want to get ahead of that,” explained Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse.
